The most desirable role of Mephistopheles is Faust. Margarita, Faust’s soul, is his favorite victim. In this performance Faust would be an ideal spectator but he doesn’t want it. He wants to experience the performance himself. Mephistopheles’ classical problem: if Faust’s signature at the contract is genuine, then Margarita’s death will be also proved genuine. What would Faust prefer?
